Mastering the Art of Perfect Campfire

Three rules for good campfire wood
Just like there are clothes and good clothes, we also can distinguish between wood and good wood. With our three, simple rules, abreviated to QKD, you will find the perfect campfire wood for even heat.

QUIETLY - Choose birch, oak, or another wood type that burns quietly. Spruce and aspen spark violently, and are two wood types that you should avoid. Sparks can fly far and can ignite vegetation and clothes.

KINDLING - Thick logs have a tendency to smolder. Use kindling wood of around 2-4 cm (3/4-1.5 in), which gives good flames and little smoke. This is especially important at the start, when you will grill juicy steaks or other goodies over the campfire pan.

DRY - Use dry wood, unless you want to send smoke signals... You will easily find this out by hitting two logs against each other. Dry wood gives a sharp sound. A blunt sound means damp wood, guaranteed a lot of smoke and potentially disgruntled neighbors.

This is how you start a fire

To get something to burn, there are 3 conditions that must be present at the same time: Fire = Flammable material (wood) + oxygen + heat

Types of Campfire

There are several types of ways to light a campfire. Tepee, Log Cabin and Platform are three types of campfire that give good flames in the campfire pan. With the campfire pan, the fire is lit up in the pan. The food is made over the campfire pan, with different accessories.

Tepee/Cone

The tepee campfire is formed like a cone and is also used as a basis to light most other campfires.

Preparation:

  • Start with the wood shavings in the middle. The natural wood shavings are environmentally friendly, burn for several minutes, and make lighting super easy.
  • Set three small pieces of wood up against each other like a tepee. Continue with a little larger pieces of wood.
  • Protect against the wind when you light the fire.
  • When the campfire is going well, add a little larger wood to the cone shape.
  • After a while, when you have good embers, feed the fire occasionally with smaller wood.

Log Cabin & Platform

Log Cabin and Platform are two versatile types of campfires. Log Cabin is stacked up just like a log cabin. This campfire burns quickly and effectively, and is a good choice if you are in a hurry to get
started cooking.

Preparation:

  • Lay two logs around 4-8 cm (1.5-3 in) parallel to each other, with a good distance between them.
  • Lay two new logs across the first layer.
  • Build a small, airy tepee fire in the middle.
  • Light it before continuing to lay logs two and two transversely upwards to desired height.
  • Feed the fire occasionally with small kindling wood.

Platform is built in the same manner as Log Cabin, but here the middle is filled for each layer. The fire is lit from the top, with a small cone fire. The Platform campfire is, therefore, very stable and superb to cook on directly. Because it is lighted at the top, it burns slower. Feeding of the fire can be done by the same building principle. Platform is the perfect winter campfire, and gives extra good heat to both hands and baby cheeks.

Proper heating for campfire

food in the campfire pan Cooking outdoors should be fun. Therefore it is wise to wait with the cooking until there are good embers. Feed the fire occasionally with small kindling during cooking. Symmetry and safety The campfire pan stands properly when the chains down to the kettle hang vertically. When in use, the campfire pan becomes hot underneath and can make burn marks in, for example, wooden terraces. We recommend, therefore, to use the wheeled undercarriage (extra accessory) that has a heat-protective plate. Over grass, the campfire pan can be adjusted a little upward with the chains.
